Fashion, Clothing and Textile

The growing mutations of the world have ensured that people no longer dress just to cover nakedness but dressing has moved from a simple art to an instrument of communication. In the past it was an art that could be mastered within months of maneuvers with the scissors and sewing machine but the complexity of the entire fashion and clothing industry has sent dealers back to school. Fashion and clothing has gone beyond just sewing but involves designing, playing with colours and fabrics, conservation, printing, marketing and management which has necessitated a formal academic training. The clothing world has become vast and with multiple exchanges, the clothes worn or displayed have become an important aspect which can make or mare an event.

Studies and Duration

The programme initiates the student into the textile/fabric world involving the production, management, storage and marketing. Students are also embedded into the dynamic and growing fashion and designing world with much emphasis on creativity. The training takes the programme from a customary art to an academic exercise involving theory and practical sessions with a mandatory supervised internship. They also work in the modern fashion workshop of the school with the assistance of sound instructors. Students also prepare and defend a project and participate in the national exams as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Fashion, Clothing and Textile by the Ministry of Higher Education.

The programme is opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level Certificate in at least two subjects excluding Religious Knowledge.

Employment Opportunities

There is a huge appetite not just for clothing but standout fashionable clothing in the world today which has ensured that the biggest employment opportunity for graduates is found in the creation of their own fashion centres. They can also gain employment in already established centres as workers or instructors to others. Their services are also demanded by textile companies involved in the production and marketing of fabrics. In Cameroon, the main structure is CICAM. Most Youth and Women Empowerment Centres today operate services in fashion and designing and graduates can work in such services as instructors. Some NGOs also train underprivileged men and women in the society in fashion and designing and they are in need of certified instructors. Their services are also needed in technical and vocational schools which are found all over Cameroon and the world.
