Hotel Management and Catering
The mutation of the world has guaranteed a growing tertiary and service industry in recent times. Previously, the tertiary industry was almost non-existent in many African countries but with the transformation of the world to a global village, the service industry in Africa in general and Cameroon is fast growing.
Hotel Management and Catering is one of those fast growing service industries in Cameroon with a wide range of opportunities for students upon graduation. As Cameroon is gradually becoming a Tourist destination, hotels are demanded together with their catering services. Moreover, with the growth of division of labour and specialization, many party organisers, weddings planners go for professional caterers than family members and friends. The programme is organized to answer the growing demands of hotels and catering services providers for professionals especially with sporting and cultural events such as the African Cup of Nations.
It seeks to train students on hotel management, reception of clients, catering, cooking of local and continental dishes etc. Both theory and practical sessions are organized to better equip students. It is opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level or its equivalent. Moreover Degree holders and others can also apply.
Studies and Duration
The programme runs for two years spiced with theory and practical field work in hotel and catering establishments. JIMIT also has an equipped catering laboratory for practical sessions. At the end of studies the student prepares and defends a project and takes the national exams as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Hotel Management and Catering delivered by the Ministry of Higher Education.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates can work in both national and international hotels. They can also work in catering establishments. Employment opportunities are also opened at the level of the Ministry of Tourism. Moreover, they can open their own hotel or catering establishment.
