Vocational Guidance and Counseling

Vocational and Professional education is fast gaining grounds in the world as a compliment to theory based education. This system of education with its particularities also employs particular measures for its management and sustainability especially counselors who would provide guidance to the student population. With the growing importance of technical and vocational education it becomes incumbent on governments and stakeholders to train personnel to provide essential support services to students. The programme seeks to train guidance counselors for vocational and technical institutions who understand the particularities of the system and able to guide students through it.

Studies and Duration

The programme runs for two academic years and opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level in at least two papers excluding Religious Knowledge or its equivalent or the Teachers’ Grade One Certificate. Teachers of Technical education with the zeal for more knowledge can also enroll. Students are taking through a theoretical a practical training coupled with a supervised internship. At the end of studies each student defends a project and takes the mandatory national exams as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Vocational Guidance and Counseling by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Employment Opportunities

Opportunities for graduates are found in technical and commercial schools, in vocational schools and training centres. Teachers already employed by the government can use the opportunity to improve upon their knowledge and consider a possible reclassification.
