Banking and Finance

At its inception some years ago, the banking and finance world was limited to executives who had attained a certain level of education. However, most of these executives were either politicians or persons with vested interest in the business and had very little or no formal training in the banking and finance world. This ensured that such institutions were either running at the loss or were unable to maximize returns coupled with poor treatment of files. The Finance world controls the real world which is why more and more financial institutions are opened requiring trained personnel. Moreover, even institutions not purely financial have financial departments running the finances, a strategic domain reserved only for trained persons.

Structure of studies and duration

Banking and Finance is a social science discipline seeking to understand social organisations and their financial operations. The programme focuses on a profound training of persons who can serve at top management positions in institutions and organisations. It broadens the training on Mathematics, banking techniques, organizational behavior, financial markets, communication etc received at the lower level with additional topics handled by specialists in the domain. It is purely a professional program which runs for four semesters and opened to holders of at least a Bachelor degree in Banking and Finance, Accountancy or related field from a recognized institution. Students also undertake a supervised internship and defend their end of course thesis as requirements for the award of a Master of Business Administration (Professional Master’s Degree) in Banking and Finance by the University of Bamenda and recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates from this programme are mostly employed by banks and financial institutions. They can also be employed by microfinance institutions, money transfer agencies as well. They can also work in the finance department of NGOs, companies and public and private institutions, schools, universities, Churches and Religious bodies etc. This advanced degree gives graduates the possibility to easily occupy senior managerial positions in organizations especially with some years of experience.
