Health Sanitary Inspector
It is a profession that goes back to the colonial days especially in Africa wherein the colonial masters had agents who went round to check the living conditions of the people and especially their toilets. After independence many African countries including Cameroon maintained the practice which was soon abandoned. This had led to a growing problem of waste management and disposal, hygiene and sanitation in the communities with malaria, typhoid being some of the consequences of poor sanitary management.
The growing need for skilled personnel to provide directives on basic hygienic conditions, sanitation, clean environment and waste disposal has necessitated the training of Health Sanitary Inspectors. Courses mostly bother on hygiene and sanitation, biology, chemistry, environmental studies, waste disposal etc.
The programme runs for three years as prescribed by the Ministries of Higher Education and Public Health. It involves both theory and field work practices. At the end of studies the student prepares and publicly defends a project. Students also take the national exam as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Health Sanitary Inspection by the Ministry of Higher Education and supervised by the Ministry of Public Health.
