Software engineering seeks to study the principles of mathematical application and computer sciences in order to create, evaluate software applications and systems that guarantee the functioning of a computer. It encircles the vast world of computer programming. The importance of computers to the modern world cannot be overemphasized as they are found in almost every sector of life today. The computer has become one of the main dynamos empowering commercial, political and social exchanges in the world with a strong dependence on software engineering.

Studies and Duration

The programme bothers on but not limited to Computer architecture, computer systems analysis, programe design, mathematics, networking, programming etc. It runs for two academic years and opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level in at least two subjects excluding Religious Studies or its equivalent. It is covers both theory and practical sessions in the computer laboratory of JIMIT. Students also undertake a supervised internship at a recognized institution. It is sanctioned at the end by the defense of an end of course project by each student and also the mandatory national exams as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Software Engineering by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Software engineers are highly demanded in electronic firms, computer based firms, corporate industries, governmental agencies and private and national and international agencies to work as Front-End Web Developer, Back-End Developer, Stack software Developer, Java Web full-stack developer, Programmer, systems engineer, in schools to teach computer lessons.
