Journalism

It is one of the most popular professions in the world and one of those sectors of public life easily infiltrated by anybody even those who are not trained. Unlike other professions, journalism is one of the rare professions that accommodate even those who have not had any formal training. However, there is always a difference between a trained journalist and an orator or a good writer. Journalism is a specialized arm of communication that seeks to train professionals who collect treat and disseminate information in the most professional manner via media channels, online platforms or institutions.

Structure of studies and duration

It is a purely social science discipline focusing on Print news, radio and television news, new communication, organizational behavior, language, media law and ethics etc. It seeks to enhance training received at the lower level. The training runs for two years and opened to holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Journalism from a recognized institution or its equivalent. Students undertake both theory and practical work supported by JIMIT campus radio. Added to this is the defense of an end of course project by each student as requirements for the award of a Professional Bachelor Degree in Journalism supervised and delivered by the government mentoring institution, the Advanced School of Mass Communication and recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Communication.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates are called to serve in media organs, public and private, national and international. The training equips them with skills to work as reporter for either print or audiovisual or combine both. They can also work as freelancers, or start their own media, online platform especially as online Journalism is becoming popular. They are also openings at the level of communication desk of NGOs and INGOs, local councils, organizations and institutions.
