Legal Assistance
The legal practice is not limited to Lawyers who have been called to the Bar but extends also to those who provide legal assistance and services other than those in the Bar. It is a specialty that goes with providing legal aid, advice, assisting in the procurement of documents and administrative assistance etc.
The training seeks to endow young men and women who are interested in the legal profession but not necessary Barristers-at-Law. Training is around fundamental courses in public and private law, administration and civil law including matrimony, finance, etc.
Studies and Duration
The programme runs for two years and opened to holders of the GCE Advance Level certificate in at least two subjects excluding Religious Knowledge or its equivalent. It comprises both theory and practical internship under strict supervision. Students crown their studies with the preparation and public defense of a project as well as taking part in the national exams as requirements to be fulfilled for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Legal Assistance by the Ministry of Higher Education.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates can serve as legal aid in Law firms and Legal Chambers. They can also work in the legal departments of public, para-public and private institutions, national and international. They are also recruited in the legal departments of Ministries and local councils.
