Medical Laboratory

Before any conclusion by the Doctor or Nurse on the malady suffered by a patient a thorough medical diagnoses is required which can only be performed by a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist. Basically MLS are confined to the Laboratory wherein they use the microscope and other medical instruments to dissect and exhale illnesses infecting the patient. They form one of the most important arms in the medical care chain and their absence can paralyze an entire medical structure. They serve as the investigative arm of the doctors and nurses to either affirm or disaffirm their hypotheses.

Structure of studies and duration

The programme is a health science discipline opened to holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Medical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent. Courses taught under this programme bother on biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Techniques, clinical biochemistry, micology, virology, parasitology, immuno-hematology, immunology etc. Students undertake intensive course work and practical work at JIMIT Laboratories for two semesters of an academic year including a supervised internship culminating in the defense of an end of course project. All these serves as requirements for the award of a Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences supervised and delivered by the mentoring government institution, the University of Bamenda and recognized by the Ministries of Higher Education and Public Health.

Employment Opportunities

Upon graduation, ML Scientist can serve as Laboratory Technicians, Laboratory Quality Managers in hospitals, clinics, public health services, NGOs, medical diagnostic centres etc. They can also open their own structure medical diagnostic centre to serve the public. NGOs and INGOs involved in healthcare also consume graduates from this field.
