The 21st century has undoubtedly become the computer age with computers being used at almost all levels of human life. This has fostered the training of skilled personnel to manage this novelty and maximize output. In most cases these computers do not work in isolation but in a system/network that must be secured from intruders, malwares, virus, scammers, hackers etc.

A Network Technician goes to satisfy these exigencies and generally involved computer sciences, information technology, networking and its security. Basically they build and maintain computer networks used by schools, banks, hospitals, businesses and ensure that the systems are secured etc. The programme revolves around Microsoft, Network Administration, Network Analyses, Security and Mathematics etc.

Studies and Duration

The programme is designed to run for two years and opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level in two science subjects excluding Religious Knowledge. It is both theory and practical with sessions at the school’s laboratory coupled with a supervised internship. This is sanctioned by the defense of a project by the student and a mandatory national exam as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Network and Security by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Employment Opportunities

Network and Security Engineers are employed in almost all sectors of life. Wherever there is a computer system it requires the inputs of such technicians to ensure that the system is sustained. Some of the job titles include Network specialist, IT Specialist. Network Technicians also have opportunities for creating their own firms and businesses with the aim of providing services to members of the public. They also work to secure the network of institutions like banks, schools, governmental agencies, organisations etc.
