Nursing
Nursing is one of the oldest professions in human history and it never loses its value so long as there are human beings on earth. From the foundations of modern Nursing laid down by the celebrated Florence Nightingale, the profession has evolved from a woman’s job to include male caregivers in hospitals and health centres and integrated health centres as well as well as NGOs, INGOs and institutions dealing with healthcare. Nurses promote health, prevent illnesses, take care of the sick, dying, able and disable. They work autonomously or supervised by a superior; surgeon, general practitioner, etc.
Structure of studies and duration
The degree programme in nursing is a purely health science discipline and opened to holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nursing or the State Registered Nurse qualification. It improves upon the training gained at the lower level. Courses bother on human anatomy and physiognomy, immuno-hematology, virology, mycology, parasitology, public health, health administration, healthcare, ethics etc. The programme which runs for two semesters of an academic year involves theory and practical sessions at the JIMIT Laboratory and a supervised internship in a hospital or health centre culminating in the defense of an end of course project as requirements for the award of a Bachelor Degree in Nursing supervised and delivered by the government mentoring institution, the University of Bamenda and recognized by the Ministries of Higher Education and Public Health.
Employment Opportunities
Nurses are basically employed in hospitals, health centres, clinics etc. They are also employed in schools, prisons and institutions where they provide first aid to patients before any further intervention. They can also open their own clinics and provide personal home care services to patients. With the rise of NGOs and INGOs in the domain of health, many graduates of this programme are also gaining employment in such organisations.
