Special Education
Children with particular physical and mental conditions such as handicaps, autistic, deaf have always been neglected in the past in educational planning and management. There were no considerations or special measures attributed to their particular situations which ensured that these children were unable to fully study at school. However, recently, the government of Cameroon decided to address the needs of these children by creating what has become known as “special needs education” with the goal of teaching these children to the level of their abilities taking into consideration their special needs. This has necessitated the training of skilled personnel in today’s context to give special attention to these special children so that education becomes available to every child.
Studies and Duration
The programme runs for two years and opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level in at least two subjects excluding Religious Knowledge or its equivalent or the Teachers’ Grade One certificate. It runs for two academic years and includes theory and practical sessions including a supervised internship. It is sanctioned at the end by the defense of a project by each student and the mandatory national exams as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Special Needs Education by the Ministry of Higher Education.
Employment Opportunities
Special needs teachers are highly demanded today in academic establishments wherein children with the need of particular assistance are admitted. They can teach in schools for the blind, deaf and any institution harboring children with special needs. Some of them are also recruited by the government especially those who had previously undertaking training in teaching. Some these graduates are consumed by the Ministry of Basic Education which has invested heavily in this project.
