Telecommunication

Telecommunication

Within the last two decades there has been a revolution in the world of communication especially within the audiovisual media and telecommunications. The radio has developed moving from shortwave to FM while television has penetrated even rural communities of the world. This has further been enhanced by the coming of satellite television and the near disappearance of antennas. In the world of the telephone the biggest mutation has been the invention and development of the mobile phone which has become more popular than the traditional fixed phone. All these movements and changes rely greatly on the efforts of telecommunication engineers who are trained to develop, manage and maintain this technology.

Studies and Duration

The programme runs for two years and opened to holders of the GCE Advanced Level in at least two science subjects excluding Religious Knowledge. The programme seeks to train engineers in the domain of telephone, audiovisual (radio, television) communication engineering. It is both theory and practical with a supervised internship. This culminates with the defense of a project by the student and also the mandatory national exams as requirements for the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Telecommunications Engineering by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates are employed as engineers in mobile telephone companies, telephone companies etc. They can also work as telecommunications/transmission/sound engineers in media organs involved in radio and television broadcast. With the growing internet market they can also offer their knowhow to internet service providers.
